NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has defended the government's decision to increase fines to unions of essential workers such as those in transport, teachers, nurses and midwives.
Unions could be hit with a $55,000 fine on the first day of industrial action and $27,500 for each day thereafter in response to unions threatening to strike further over wages.Mr Perrottet says these illegal strikes are risking the lives of families across New South Wales. Nurses and teachers across the state are set to walk off the job next Tuesday and Thursday in response to the government's failure to address public sector workers in the NSW budget. "Instead of blaming unions for industrial action, Mr Perrottet needs to look at the man in the mirror," he said. "People are filling up half a tank of petrol and then rationing it out over a fortnight. They are opting for sausages over steak and cancelling family holidays," he added.
