Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Nationals leader David Littleproud have signalled support for a border closure to Indonesia over foot and mouth disease.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and Nationals leader David Littleproud have signalled their support for shutting the border to Indonesia, as the Coalition warns the government is “playing with a loaded gun” on foot and mouth disease.on whether the border should be closed to keep the disease out, something Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says he has repeatedly asked about but has been told remains unnecessary.

“I believe we should shut the border, but I think the prime minister needs to explain why that has not happened. And, so far, he hasn’t – he hasn’t done that,” Mr Dutton told 2GB radio. Mr Watt said there was foot and mouth disease across about 70 countries, and this had never prompted Australia to shut the border to them.
