Queensland records 5,699 new COVID-19 cases

There are now 25,924 active cases in the state, but Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said authorities believed there were many more unconfirmed cases in the community.

Dr Gerrard said he was unable to provide any further details on the suspected COVID-related death of a man in his 30s on the Gold Coast on Sunday because it was being investigated by the Coroner.Health Minster Yvette D'Ath acknowledged the testing system in the state was under strain and warned many private pathology clinics would not reopen today.

There have been lengthy delays at testing sites cross the state over the new year long weekend, with authorities yesterday admitting the system was under strain, partly due to private providers being closed. The Chief Health Officer has acknowledged that the COVID testing system has been stretched in recent days."If you are sick and not easily able to get tested at present, please stay at home.
