Strike action has officially begun on what is expected to be one of the most disrupted days on public transport to date for Sydneysiders.

Thousands of rail workers walked off the job at 10am and until at least 4pm there will be major delays on trains across New South Wales. The North Shore, Northern and Western Line, Blue Mountains Line, Central Coast Newcastle Line, and all regional lines, except stations south to Melbourne, will be running very few services throughout the day.Thousands of Sydney rail commuters are being impacted by industrial action on major lines today.It's the latest stage in an ongoing stand-off between the state government and the rail union over the safety of the current fleet.

Yesterday, the union even appeared to suggest that graffiti on some of the trains was one of the reasons for the strike action.READ MORE:"Refusing to operate trains that don't meet minimum safety standards is the most basic industrial action you can possibly get, but what it is doing is laying bare just how poorly our current trains are maintained," he said.

Claassens said trains that don't meet 'minimum safety standards' – an official safety level within the railway – could include those with passenger safety intercom systems that don't work, toilets that aren't functioning, or even mechanical issues.
