A Sydney council is attempting to fight off a second Aboriginal land claim in two years, over a local park used by community members.
A Sydney council is set to challenge an Aboriginal land claim over a local park, just more than a year after voting against a separate claim.
If Aboriginal land claims are successful, it results in the return of eligible Crown land to Aboriginal ownership under the NSW Government's 1983 Aboriginal Land Rights Act. “The claim should be denied as the park is currently being used by the community for a lawful and essential public purpose," a council spokeswoman said in the statement, according to NewsLocal.
President of the Mosman Parks & Bushland Association, Kate Eccles, said the lack of information over why the claim was submitted was a key concern. “It doesn’t mean to say there are plans to develop the land, but we would be very sorry if the park was to be lost.”
