A drug and alcohol-fuelled teenage driver who killed a young couple and their unborn baby in a stolen car south of Brisbane will be released six years to the day following the crash. 7NEWS
The teen fled the scene at the time, stealing keys from a nearby house before being caught by a resident and arrested.Matthew Field and Kate Leadbetter were walking their dogs when fatally struck by a Landcruiser.On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with a non parole period of six years.Matthews’ dad Russell Field fought back tears as he told the court that Australia Day - and his family’s lives - would never be the same again.
“How could you create such destruction in people’s lives and then do a runner at the first opportunity you had?Leadbetter’s mother, Jeannie Thorne, described her only child as “the light of our lives, the hope for our future”. But the teenager had to be sentenced as a child, with the “grave nature of offending” balanced by his youth.“No sentence will be adequate ... can’t do justice to the suffering you have caused,” Burns told the teenager.
