Britain has named former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott as a trade adviser, rejecting complaints from critics that his conservative views about women and gay people made him unfit to represent the United Kingdom.

Australia's former prime minister Tony Abbott says he is pleased to be officially appointed as Britain's trade adviser as the country seeks to negotiate new post-Brexit deals.

"At a time of increased protectionism and global insecurity, it's vital that the UK is a strong voice for open markets and that we play a meaningful role in reshaping global trading rules alongside like-minded countries," International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said. "Tony Abbott and his views should have no place representing Britain," said Emily Thornberry, trade spokeswoman for the main opposition Labour party.
