Toyota Australia has discontinued the Granvia people mover due to its failure to meet the Australian Design Rule 98/00 for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems. Low demand and market trends towards large SUVs also contributed to the decision.

Toyota has made the decision to discontinue its Granvia people mover in Australia . This comes as a result of the vehicle failing to meet the Australia n Design Rule 98/00, which sets specific performance standards for autonomous emergency braking ( AEB ) systems. While the Granvia is equipped with AEB , the system doesn't meet the required criteria. This means any new Granvia s sold after March 1, 2025, would need to be retroactively compliant to be legally sold.

Toyota Australia's Vice President for sales, marketing, and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, stated that the decision was made after a thorough review of sales figures, market trends, production complexity, and future regulations. He explained that the people mover segment only represents one percent of the total market, with buyers increasingly opting for large SUVs. Consequently, Toyota couldn't justify continuing production of the Granvia. The Granvia's discontinuation leaves buyers seeking a Toyota people mover with limited options. They can choose the HiAce Commuter, a 12-seat van, or one of Toyota's three-row SUVs. This decision reflects a broader trend in the Australian automotive market, with several other brands, including Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki, also discontinuing models due to the stringent new safety regulations. Toyota cited low demand for the Granvia as another contributing factor to its demise. Last year, the Granvia was Toyota's second-worst-selling vehicle in Australia after the hydrogen fuel-cell Mirai, with only 117 units sold. To put this into perspective, Hyundai sold that many Starias in just one year, while Kia moved more than ten times as many Carnivals. Despite its initial launch in 2019 as a successor to the popular Tarago, the Granvia struggled to gain traction. Even in its most successful year, 2020, Toyota sold only 276 Granvias. This pales in comparison to the Tarago's performance, even in its final year before discontinuation, when Toyota sold more leftover Taragos than Granvias in the entire year. When introduced, the Granvia was considerably different from the Tarago. It was larger, boxier, and more expensive, featuring rear-wheel drive and a diesel engine compared to the Tarago's front-wheel drive and petrol powertrain. Based on the HiAce, the Granvia was notably wider and longer than its predecessor. Its initial starting price was $62,990 before on-road costs, placing it at a similar price point as a top-spec Tarago. It remains unclear why Toyota opted not to introduce the Alphard or Vellfire to Australia, as these models are popular used imports, offer a hybrid powertrain option (similar to the Tarago in its Japanese market), and are more closely sized to the original Tarago. Adding to the intrigue, Toyota's luxury brand Lexus has subsequently launched the LM, closely related to the Alphard and Vellfire. While Toyota offers other people movers globally, such as the Voxy, Sienta, Noah, and Sienna, these models are either smaller or only available in left-hand drive (Sienna). This leaves the Australian market with fewer options in the people mover segment, particularly for those seeking a vehicle comparable in size and functionality to the discontinued Tarago
