A young man from Ulladulla is fighting for his life after sustaining a severe spinal injury while jumping off a jetty.
A young man has been airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital with suspected spinal injuries. Ulladulla man Blake D'Ombrain broke his neck and injured his spine after jumping off a jetty into a sandbank on New Year's Eve. Nineteen-year-old Blake D'Ombrain has become a suspected quadriplegic after breaking his neck after jumping from The Gantry at Bawley Point on the state's south coast.
By his side in hospital a week on from the accident, the teenager's older sister Maddison D'Ombrain said her brother needed help breathing as his body had 'forgotten how', but that he was showing positive signs of recovery. 'He is starting to breathe on his own and so hopefully the life support tube will be taken out soon,' Ms D'Ombrain said. She described her brother as a 'very active, very sporty, and very cheeky' young man with a tough road ahead. Blake D'Ombrain played rugby league for Grenfell Goanna's youth league, winning the Players Player award in October last year.'He is pulling silly faces at us and having a bit of a laugh … we're giving him scratches and hugs,' Ms D'Ombrain said.Ms D'Ombrain said doctors believed Blake would be 'lucky' to gain some movement in his arms, which only time and rehabilitation will reveal. She said the thing haunting her 'very hands-on' younger brother at the moment was being stuck, unable to move, and do things on his own. 'I think the worst thing is he is bored out of his brain; he wants to do things for himself,' she said.Blake D'Ombrain grew up surfing and playing rugby league on the south coast before moving to Wagga Wagga to start his own trade business
