More than a million WA workers will be required to get a third COVID vaccination as Premier Mark McGowan announces the state will close its borders to Tasmania and the Northern Territory from Boxing Day.

Western Australia has become the first jurisdiction to introduce mandatory COVID-19 booster shots for certain sectors of its population.

All workers who were previously required to get two doses of the jab will now also be required to get a booster shot within one month of becoming eligible. It means for the first time in more than a year, WA will have a hard border with every state and territory.Mr McGowan said the growing outbreaks of COVID-19 in other states, especially New South Wales, were "a major cause of concern".
