The once cosy relationship between US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron has soured.The list of affected products is designed to hit France where it hurts: its national pride, and the salvo quickly achieved its desired impact. The French government has vowed to retaliate, while Trump and Macron could barely contain their hostility towards each other following a bilateral meeting in London on Tuesday.
If this all sounds familiar, that's because it is. Macron's go-it-alone grab on Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon bears striking similarities to the one once championed by Scott Morrison. As treasurer, Morrison used the 2018 budget to flag a tax on digital advertising revenue that promised to raise hundreds of millions a year.
