Could the surprise devastation witnessed in the Northern Territory election a few months ago foreshadow a similar result in the ACT this weekend, or is the shared 'territory' label where the similarities between the NT and the ACT end?

Lia Finocchiaro came to power as Northern Territory chief minister in August, while Labor 's Andrew Barr and the Liberals' Elizabeth Lee are hoping to be voted in this weekend in the ACT .The sheer scale of Labor 's landslide defeat in the Northern Territory election a few months ago shocked many people.

So could the surprise devastation witnessed in the NT foreshadow a similar result this weekend. Or is the shared "territory" label where the similarities between the NT and the ACT end?The Northern Territory vote was won by the Country Liberal Party which capitalised on voter outrage about one key issue – law and order.

But no "hot button" issue has so far emerged that is dominant enough to force an outrage-based ousting of the incumbent ACT Labor party, according to Mr Gerritsen, a former Australian National University public policy academic now based in Alice Springs. "By the end of the decade, we will have a fiscal debt of over $30 billion dollars, and my estimation is close to $34 billion," Mr Gerritsen said.Former ANU public policy academic Rolf Gerritsen says no dominant enough 'hot button' issue has emerged to oust ACT Labor based on outrage so far in the ACT election.Mr Gerritsen said it left the NT with almost no choice but to controversially green-light fracking for gas to pull itself out of a fiscal black hole.

Labor has been in power for nearly 23 years with Mr Barr now at the helm for a decade, making him Australia's longest serving incumbent.ACT Labor Leader Andrew Barr has been Chief Minister for almost a decade, a run Canberra Liberals Leader Elizabeth Lee hopes to end. In contrast, under leader Elizabeth Lee, the Canberra Liberals of today closely resemble the more moderate Canberra Liberals that managed to hold power in the ACT in the 1990s under Kate Carnell.
