A fight at Emerald State High School in Central Queensland escalated when a student allegedly produced a knife, leading to a lockdown and multiple injuries.
A Central Queensland high school was thrust into lockdown on Wednesday morning following reports of a student wielding a knife during a fight. Emergency services, including several police vehicles and ambulances, rushed to the scene at Emerald State High School shortly before 11am. The school implemented a lockdown for nearly two hours, from 10.50am to 12.30pm, as staff worked to maintain order and ensure the safety of students and teachers.
A 13-year-old girl sustained facial injuries and was transported to Emerald Hospital in a stable condition. Two other students, one with minor facial injuries and another with a minor head injury, were treated on site, along with a female teacher who also suffered minor facial injuries. The Queensland Department of Education confirmed that emergency services were called upon to assist staff in managing the situation. Once the lockdown was lifted, classes resumed as normal. The department emphasized that the safety and well-being of students and staff are paramount, and families of those directly involved in the incident were immediately contacted and offered support. Ongoing counselling and support services are readily available for anyone who requires them. This incident is not an isolated one, as the school has faced several lockdowns in recent years due to safety threats and student altercations involving weapons. Just six months ago, students were forced into classrooms after a student brandished a knife on campus.
