ANALYSIS: Are northside Canberrans different from southsiders? The census says yes

Using just two factors — the numbers of Vietnam-born and secular residents — our model can accurately categorise 87.4 per cent of suburbs into north and south.Canberrans who live north of the Captain Cook Memorial Jet tend to be younger.Put simply, if many people in an area are under the age of 25, it's likely to be in the north.Campbell is particularly crammed with young people , as are the northern-most Gungahlin suburbs.
Places like Forrest, Barton, Deakin, Yarralumla and Red Hill had particularly high levels of people earning $3,000 or more a week.That leaves just one clue to finish solving this geographic riddle.Canberra has more than 12,000 Chinese-born residents, and they're more likely to settle in the north.A large number live in Civic as well as Lawson next to the University of Canberra.When all five factors are considered, our model easily discerns the location of 102 of the 103 Canberra suburbs.
However, it can't quite figure out Theodore. The Tuggeranong suburb's residents are young, and slightly more are born in Vietnam than you'd expect.So there you have it: statistical proof that north Canberrans are different from southsiders.Still, it's worth exploring what underlies Canberran's two big tribal stereotypes — so long as you don't take it too seriously.
