Australian-first research has found more than one-third of lamb mince purchased from supermarkets over a six-month period contained Toxoplasma - a potentially dangerous parasite that can cause blindness. 9News

Australian-first research by Flinders University found more than one-third of lamb mince purchased from supermarkets over a six month period contained Toxoplasma - a potentially dangerous parasite that can cause blindness.

"Once you've been infected with Toxoplasma you carry it for the rest of your life," she said. The young, elderly and people with diseases that affect the immune system are most at risk of falling ill if they consume infected meat. "Most people who have this parasite aren't even aware - many of us have it and it doesn't cause us any problems," said Prof. Smith.

Experts says there's no need to take lamb off the menu this summer and there are simple things you can do to avoid infection.
