Authorities in New Zealand have identified the first victim of a volcanic eruption on New Zealand's White Island which left at least five people dead.

Authorities in New Zealand have identified the first victim of a volcanic eruption on New Zealand's White Island which left at least five people dead. Tour-guide Hayden Marshall-Inman from the eastern Bay of Plenty region - described as an "energetic young member of the community" - was the first person confirmed dead following the Monday afternoon tragedy.

Mark Marshall-Inman posted a tribute to his brother on Facebook saying "he passed away doing the one thing he loved". New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed on Tuesday at least five people were dead, eight were missing and 31 remained in hospital following the eruption. The prime minister said “no signs of life have been seen” and they were unable to launch recovery efforts as yet because the island was still too dangerous.
