Hundreds of trees have been illegally poisoned and chopped down in a popular Willoughby reserve. Now the council is offering a reward to find the culprit.

A north shore community is on the hunt for vandals who poisoned, hacked and chainsawed 265 trees – some more than 80 years old – in what Willoughby Council has described as a large-scale environmental crime.

Large Christmas bushes and Sydney redgums, with girths of more than three metres, have been poisoned. Banksia trees have been chainsawed down, leaving huge branches lying on the bush floor. And an old sign warning about vandalism of trees has been pulled out of the ground and thrown down the embankment.

“Everyone’s upset that it’s happened, and anyone I’ve spoken to in the community is flabbergasted that somebody would do this,” she said.John Moratelli, a local resident and independent councillor who is also a member of the Willoughby Environmental Protection Association, said he has “never seen anything like this” in his 25 years of living in the area.
